Sudden cardiac death also known as sudden arrest is death resulting from an abrupt loss of heart function (cardiac arrest). The time and mode of death are unexpected. Usually it takes only 10 minutes from the attack until death. The most common causes of cardiac arrest is coronary heart disease (80%), follow by cardiomyopathy (10 to 15%), valvular heart disease (5%) and the others rare.

Most cardiac arrests occur when the diseased heart begins to exhibit rapid and/or chaotic activity — ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. Some are due to extreme slowing of the heart. All these events are called life-threatening arrhythmias. The risk factors for sudden cardiac death include similar risk factors for patient post myocardial infarction, recurrent unexplained syncope, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure.

Prevention for the sudden cardiac arrest is by treatment with drug such as aspirin, ACE inhibitors, sotalol, placebo, aminodarone. The others prevention is by treat the complication such as coronary heart disease, ventricular fibrillation.
